Somerset Triumph at Trevose
Despite national storms our first Shield match of the season played at Trevose Golf Club against Cornwall on the 10th June was played in warm sunshine and a moderate breeze. I was pleased to greet all our players who arrived in good time for their match, many had stayed locally overnight, others setting off early from Burnham and Saltford Golf Clubs.
We were lucky to have 5 ladies from links courses and two who knew Trevose GC really well. The course was superb, having been prepared for next week’s England Senior Men’s Championships. We had a number of players new to Seniors Ladies match play but they did us proud, I walked the course with Cornwall’s Captain and proudly watched our team as they played through the first 9 holes. What great golf and at the turn we were up in 6 games and all square in one match.
Our bronze players, especially those from Burnham and Minehead displayed a brilliant links golf ability. This really influenced their playing partners, leading us to a wonderful win 4-3 away. We halved two games, lost one on the last hole and one on the 17th but won the last three games coming in. Our last match pair Sandra Ford, Long Sutton GC and Judy Schroeder, Burnham had no idea it all hinged on them.
The whole day was played in a tremendous spirit. The match meal was enjoyed by all.
A massive thank you to the commitment of our team.
Angela Warnes, Oake Manor, Pauline Parnell and Lesley Organ from Saltford, Ann Gates and Sue Harrop from Wheathill, Claire Biggs, Isle Of Wedmore, Sandra Ford, Long Sutton, Mary Beakes and Linda Trump from Minehead, Jill Paul, Taunton & Pickeridge, Judy Schroeder, Jane Harris and Jenny Johnson from Burnham & Berrow and Janet Partington, Woodsprings.
The drive home was dreadful constant heavy rain but it didn’t matter then.

Closely fought Shield match v Devon County Team.
The Somerset and Devon County teams were closely matched for their game on 15th July at Honiton Golf Club. Very few silver players gave or received shots and the Bronze were pretty closely matched too.
Our first match out was a 4 and 3 win to Angie Warnes, Oake Manor and Mary Beakes, Minehead. Watching the second match on the 18th green was nerve racking as they were all square until the final putt, Devon’s dropped, ours didn’t, so close for Pauling Parnell, Saltford and Jane Harries, Burnham & Berrow, loss l down.
We lost the 3rd game, although very closely contested 2 and 1, Mary Dolman, Salford and Gill McGrath, Wells.
The next two games highlighted how close this match was with Kay Luckett, Minehead and Jill Paul, Taunton & Pickeridge and Jenny Hay Burnham & Berrow, and Patsy Morgan Taunton & Pickeridge both halving on the 18th hole.
The 6th match Jenny Elliott, who stood in at the 11th hour and Meryl Williams Saltford lost 3 and 2 but gave it their all.
Our final game Val Frazer, Long Sutton & Diane Ramsey, Wells secured a 4 and 3 win
Result 3 and 4 loss to Somerset.
This was the toughest game we have played, we were so close to a 4 / 3 win, rather than a 3 / 4 loss. This leaves the Shield event wide open, Cornwall, Devon and Somerset all on a win each, bring on Dorset in September.
All of our matches have been played in an amazing spirit and friendly atmosphere.
Finally Honiton Golf Club. The course was wonderful, the best l have ever seen it, some very challenging, if not quirky holes. Honiton also have new caterers who provided an enjoyable buffet and a wide selection of desserts.
My thanks to our team and President for their commitment to and support of Somerset Senior Ladies Golf.
