at The Point Golf Club, Polzeath

Monday 8 April 2019

We had an excellent match at a course in very good condition and a set of very pleasant and friendly ladies. Many of the matches went to the finish or nearly so but Somerset met with real success winning. Well done, team!

The results: Somerset won 31/2 to a 1/2

Match 1 Ros Gait and Claire Biggs winning 4 and 3

Match 2 Sandra Ford and Sandra Basford winning 2up

Match 3 Gill Edwards and Pauline Cornish won the last hole to win 1 up

Match 4 Gwen Cavill and Linda Anniss halved

There was lovely fish and chips as one of the choices for our meal and there was lots of laughter. The journey home for those not staying the night in Cornwall was what our Cornish friends called “A Cornish Evening” and so very easy and pleasant.

The result: Somerset lost 5/3

The weather was very kind for a day of matches played in tremendous spirit. The Dorset ladies were a real pleasure to play with and the level of noise and laughter after the matches was amazing! Of special note was the catering at Wheathill - we had a truly delicious meal beautifully cooked and presented and the catering staff were so efficient and pleasant.

20 June 2019

The result: Somerset lost 21/2 to 51/2

The distance to travel was reasonable. The friendly staff welcomed us warmly on arrival.  Overall the food was good; some dietary issues on the day which were dealt with well by Bryn Meadows.

An amazing “Ascot Day party” was in full swing – lovely dresses to see.  Difficult to hear each other talk at the beginning but gave us all great entertainment watching the ladies concerned – we were under-dressed for sure.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

The result: Somerset won 41/2 to 31/2

Enmore Park did a great job. There were compliments galore on the quality and pleasure of playing the course from both sides.

The catering was superb. Bacon baps were overflowing with bacon and the vegetarian and gluten free orders were equally delicious. The meal afterwards was absolutely delicious, with a choice of 5 vegetables. It certainly has set a very high standard. The chocolate tart or lemon posset were divine! Well done to Warren and his team. The young lady sorting out all the orders was so helpful.

I shall be sending a congratulatory email to the Office to pass on to all the staff on and off the course.

Plus the icing on the cake we won!!!

5th August 2019

The result: Somerset lost 31/2 to 41/2

The matches all proceeded in a friendly spirit. The course was beautiful. The sweeping fairways gave excellent views including Salisbury Cathedral.

All of the matches were completed in good time including the last which went to a nail biting finish on the 18th. Everyone had time to change and relax before sitting down to a delicious carvery meal followed by a choice of puddings and coffee.

at Wells Golf Club

3rd September 2019

The result: SLPC lost 6 1/2 to 1 1/2

The atmosphere created by the players was fabulous - full of fun and enjoyment and the laughter both on and off the course reflected this very well. The weather for some was rather wet in the early stages of the match but as the wind blew the rain away we were just left with the clouds overhead.

The match was played in good spirit – good golf was played though the final score was not in our favour. It was great that the following players saved us from a complete whitewash:

Fay Galley and Virginia Suttle – Halved

Di Yates and Lyn Gridley – won

Well done to Carole Patterson for getting nearest the pin on the 5th hole

All the other players came in with a good second place ready to take the men on again in 2020!! Players commented ‘well we stood back in amazement at the excellent golf being played by the men!!’

The match even raised money for the Wells GC charity with Sandra’s clever idea to fine the men who won for their inconsiderate behavior – just brilliant.

The welcome by Wells GC and the Somerset Mens Past Captains was wonderful. The meal was excellent with very good, friendly and efficient service. Thanks to everyone.

3rd September 2019

The result: SLPC won 5 1/2 to 2 1/2

It was wonderful that the sun shone for the match as the day before had been really challenging weather. Tall Pines Golf Staff welcomed us brilliantly with friendly manner from the Pro Shop, bar staff and the catering manager Mark. The course was in very good condition and the views were stunning. Even the noise from the aircraft taking off did not disrupt our players from achieving a great win. Well done to all team players.

Very good meal.
