2018 SCLGA Junior Girls Spring Meeting 22nd April.

The 2018 Spring meeting hosted at Mendip Spring Golf Club was a great success. The Mendip Spring owners have always been really supportive of the girls and that continued this year with a helpful friendly approach to all involved.  9 girls competed for the Chivers Trophy, an 18 hole qualifying Stableford  played on quite a challenging course. Handicaps ranged from 4 to 39. Lizzy from Orchardleigh GC, playing off a 25 handicap, came in with 43 points, winning the Chivers Trophy. Watching Lizzy play you can see she has a great future in golf. Amelia, County Junior Captain was in 2nd place with 34pts. Full results below.

18 new- to -golf juniors played a 9 hole event. Libbie from Farrington GC 1st. Lucy from Tickenham Golf Centre 2nd, Katie from Saltford GC, 3rd and Daisy from Saltford GC 4th. These events would not be possible without the group of volunteers supporting on the day. The 9 hole event benefited from 2 adults accompanying each group of 3 players around the course. County President Amanda Mayne gave up her Sunday to help and support. Amanda, who is also a player for England Seniors, gave encouragement and advice to our new to golf players. Amanda then went off to fly out to France in a golfing event. Thank you to all those involved in the day.

SOMERSET JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018

This was the first championship for the Junior girls, decided upon to allow the girls of handicap 20 or below to experience 36 holes of competitive golf. It was run side by side  with an 18 hole competition for the higher handicaps and those new to county golf competitions. The weather was. splendid and the Isle of Wedmore golf course  was in fine condition. The girls played some great golf in good spirits, supervised by Janet Fear our referee for the day.

8 girls entered the 18 hole Championship competition, one of them playing 18 holes for the first time. Past President Ellie Harper kindly gave a new trophy, the Harper Rose bowl (full of Roses chocolates!) for the Gross winner who was Jo Champions from Burnham and Berrow with a score of 92. Best nett was won by Alex Champion,  Burnham and Berrow,  with a nett 65. Evie Williams (Isle of Wedmore) scored 36 stableford points and Libbie Dezis from Farrington Park was given a little prize to mark her first 18 holes of competitive golf.

The 36 hole competition had 12 players and there was some good scoring on the day. The winner was Harriet Lockley (Isle of Wedmore) with Gross 153. The U 15 Gross Champion was Davina Xanh from Mendip Spring. Best nett was won by Frankie Dezis (Farrington Park)  with 143 nett and the best Stableford score of 77 points  was won by Leah Bowden from Burnham and Berrow. The prizes were presented by County President Amanda Mayne.

The first 18 holes of both Competitions was used as the Daily Telegraph qualifier and the Gross was won by Harriet with 75 and Jo Champion won the Nett with 60.

After the presentation the girls sat down together to have a meal and, judging by the noise level, there was lots to chat about.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the day, the Junior committee, the county officials, the parents and especially the girls for taking part. Looking forward to next year already!
