Somerset Girls Junior Coaching

Coaching report 14th January Futures squad at Farrington Park

Apart from receiving your lovely new Somerset Girls Polos and the touch the chin twice before you move your head stretch, the main theme was MATCHPLAY.

Chris and I played a 6 ball challenge into the net to try and get you to understand the scoring. You then challenged each other to this.

We then had a 5 hole matchplay putting competition, where you learnt how to mark the ball properly, and whose turn it was to play first.

I hope you enjoyed the round the houses matchplay game, whereby you had to keep the ball outside the electric wire, keep the ball on the green and putt the ball round the houses before it went into the hole. You needed to use your feel and imagination to win the hole!!

After a short break and a few sips of hot chocolate we then went out for holes playing more match play. It was great to hear so much laughter and see so many great shots.

Well done to everyone today and thank you Chris and Alysia for all you help.

Junior Coaching at Burnham & Berrow on Sunday 19th November.

Performance & Development Squads

The weather was certainly in our favor at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club, so we  made the most of it by

setting up 3 different aspects, putting, chipping & pitching  to practice for an hour, before heading out onto the golf course for a step aside scramble.

One of the stations was putting - here we set up a string line on a straight putt and a string line set out on a breaking putt. This helped to understand alignment and control of the putting stroke. Another putting drill we had was putts from 9, 18, 27, 36 feet from the hole and the aim was to get the ball finishing with a square marked on the green.

The short game area was set out to challenge the girls to chip the ball from four very different positions into an area 6 feet from the hole. This had the girls really using their imagination on how to play the shots and what club to use.

On the pitching station we had the girls practice shots from 30, 50 & 70 yards we then had them attempt a skills challenge on the Trackman to the same distances they had practiced. This was very eye opening and helped the girls to understand the varying swing lengths required & in some cases a change of club to carry the ball those distances.

Evie from the Development programme had the best score with 72.5 out of 100, which is very good. The average was in the 40s.

We then had a stroll up to the channel course and mixed up the teams of Development & Performance to play a step aside Texas Scramble. It was great to see the girls working as a team on the course & discussing how each shot should be played, how they thought putts would break and being under a bit of pressure in some cases.

It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves & working hard on their game, keep up the good work & I look forward to seeing those pitching scores improve next time.

Futures Coaching at Farrington Park 12th November

Plan A for the Futures went out the window today when I realised how cold it was coaching the tigers this morning and I had a few in tears.

So, we worked on 3 areas today that were mainly range based, firstly we learnt how to hit a 30 yard pitch with a slightly out to in crisp strike achieving check - bounce, bounce stop.

Then, swinging the fairway wood on the same path we tried to achieve a fade (banana from left to right)

We visited the short game area for 15 minutes to see if we could put into practice the bounce, bounce stop and as always the Junior County Captain Amelia Matthews showed how exactly to play the shot.

We ended the day smashing the driver, finishing with a ballistic exercise that helps improve balance, flexibility, core strength and the muscle memory to get the 3 points of contact--knees kissing--shoulder under the chin and club in the back of the neck/head.

Well done to Ffion that won all the girls a prize!

The next session is at Farrington on the 10th December, please wrap up warm and bring drinks and snacks.

Practice what we worked on today if you want to improve.
