SW County Match Week Report from County Captain - Amanda
Sunday – the girls arrived at Saltford Golf Club for 9.00 am – hopes were high for a great match week. The practice round - everyone was playing well (that was a relief). During the round it quickly became apparent the greens were very quick, having been double cut. On holes 10 and 11 it was impossible to get the ball near the hole if you were on the wrong side of it, so to save 3 putting we had to be very precise with the iron shot into the green.
Monday – we were all very excited about this match as we were playing Gloucestershire, last year’s winners. At lunch time we were 2 – 1 up which was a great start, however, during the afternoon the matches gradually slipped away from us and we were disappointed to lose 4 – 5. Even though we lost we were still very positive as it was a very close match. If we could win all our other matches (and somebody could beat Gloucestershire) we were still in with a chance of winning.
Tuesday – we had to play Wiltshire today, and with some very heavy showers during the day the girls played very well to win 7 – 2. This was brilliant because if it came down to the wire at the end, the total of matches could be very important.
Wednesday – Devon were our opponents, but we were all on a high after such a good win yesterday, and again the girls played some superb golf and won the match 8 – 1. We were all thrilled at seeing Naomi Buchanan as she has been a great supporter of Somerset over the years. The points after Wednesday were as follows : Somerset – 2 points Dorset – 3 pointsGloucestershire – 3 points Our hopes for Thursday were that, if Dorset could beat Gloucestershire and if we could beat Dorset on Friday, we could still win. We, of course, had to beat Cornwall on Thursday.
Thursday – we played Cornwall today and, true to form, the girls again played some stunning golf winning 8 – 1 equaling our best win yesterday, even in very windy and cold conditions. Dorset did beat Gloucestershire – so there was still a chance. Somerset – 3 points Dorset – 4 points Gloucestershire – 3 points
Friday – today was the most important day of the week as we had to play Dorset who hadn’t lost a match all week, but if we could just beat them we could win. The girls were at the club by 7.00 am warming up for our 8.00 am tee off. However at lunch time we were 3 – 0 down. We knew we had to win all the singles which was a enormous challenge. After lunch the girls were positive again and teed off knowing what they had to do but after some closely fought matches the end result was 1½ - 7½. Dorset were the overall winners, they have a very, very strong team and I am sure they will do well at County Finals in September representing the South West Region. We wish them all the best.
