2019 Friendly Match Results & Reports

Somerset Triumph at Trevose

Despite national storms our first Shield match of the season played at Trevose Golf Club against Cornwall on the 10th June was played in warm sunshine and a moderate breeze. I was pleased to greet all our players who arrived in good time for their match, many had stayed locally overnight, others setting off early from Burnham and Saltford Golf Clubs.

We were lucky to have 5 ladies from links courses and two who knew Trevose GC really well. The course was superb, having been prepared for next week’s England Senior Men’s Championships. We had a number of players new to Seniors Ladies match play but they did us proud, I walked the course with Cornwall’s Captain and proudly watched our team as they played through the first 9 holes. What great golf and at the turn we were up in 6 games and all square in one match.

Our bronze players, especially those from Burnham and Minehead displayed a brilliant links golf ability. This really influenced their playing partners, leading us to a wonderful win 4-3 away. We halved two games, lost one on the last hole and one on the 17th but won the last three games coming in. Our last match pair Sandra Ford, Long Sutton GC and Judy Schroeder, Burnham had no idea it all hinged on them.

The whole day was played in a tremendous spirit. The match meal was enjoyed by all.

A massive thank you to the commitment of our team.

Angela Warnes, Oake Manor, Pauline Parnell and Lesley Organ from Saltford, Ann Gates and Sue Harrop from Wheathill, Claire Biggs, Isle Of Wedmore, Sandra Ford, Long Sutton,  Mary Beakes and Linda Trump from Minehead, Jill Paul, Taunton & Pickeridge, Judy Schroeder, Jane Harris and Jenny Johnson from Burnham & Berrow and Janet Partington, Woodsprings.

The drive home was dreadful constant heavy rain but it didn’t matter then.

Tough match for our Senior Ladies at The New Forest GC - 17 June 2019

All our ladies had a good journey to the New Forest and had both a tough course and a tough team to play.

Not many of our players had experienced moorland golf, especially with horses and ponies trotting about. There was evidence of recent heavy rain as they had to negotiate some boggy areas, however they all felt it was an experience to remember. The weather was beautiful, as where the views.

The Somerset team were up against it from the start as Hampshire could only field 4 bronze and 11 silver players instead of the normal 7 of each category.

Cathy Olive & Yvette Gregg took their match to the 18th losing on a final putt.

Eve Bolton & Pat Campbell had a win, again on the 18th one up.

Lynda Sage & Marilyn Kirby had a solid win 3/2. Marilyn was delighted to play to her new lower handicap.

2 matches finished on the 16th hole and two had a tougher time finishing 6/5. Result Loss 5-2

Somerset have a really .good selection of players who clearly enjoy their County golf. The match was played in great spirit. I want to thank all our players for their commitment to matches and being such fun to Captain.

Somerset Seniors win against Gloucestershire County Seniors

Mendip Spring GC was the home venue choice for the friendly match against Gloucestershire on 27th June. The course was in superb condition and the club staff ensured the players had an enjoyable day.

The weather was beautiful, although the wind became very tricky in the later stages of the match,

Gloucestershire fielded a strong team with some very low handicappers but this was well matched by Somerset.

Mandy Head, Long Sutton GC and Jan Scilly, Bath GC led the team out and they played superb golf having an impressive 7/6 win. Eunice Bond IOW GC and Sue Bamping, Wheathill GC also had an impressive win 6/5, what a start. We lost the third match 4/3, then went on to halve the fourth game with Sue Harrop, Wheathill GC and Connie Stolworthy, Long Sutton GC. The last four games were very tight, we lost 4/1 then won 2 games 1 up and lost the last match 1 down, all happening on the 18th hole. The final hole is a tough Par 3 over a large pond and was playing into the wind, a terrific hole to watch.

There were wins for Angela Baker, Long Sutton GC and Virginia Suttle, Mendip Spring GC and Fay Galley, Bath GC and Pat Whitehead, Long Sutton who is well known for her strong short game in match play.

The team result was a win to Somerset 4 half to 3 half.

The players and officials enjoyed a lovely 2 course meal to end a day of Good Golf, Good Company and Good Spirit.

Not mentioned above. Sue Tarry, Worlbury GC, Pat Thomas, Woodspring GC , Sue Hockey, Well GC,  Janice D Lawrence, IOW GC. Jill Paul Vice Captain, Taunton & Pickeridge GC and Jackie Long, Stockwood Vale GC. These ladies played really well against tough opposition, always hard to lose on the last hole.

Well done team.

Somerset Seniors

Another success for Somerset Senior Ladies against Wiltshire.

On July 2nd at home venue Isle Wedmore Golf Club, Somerset hosted their friendly match against Wiltshire County Veterans. The Isle of Wedmore Golf course is an ideal venue for Senior golf, well presented, not too challenging, despite 3x Par 5’s in succession and a really good service by the staff.

Wiltshire fielded a team that included some very high handicappers, which resulted in some of our pairing giving 22 shots. The average shot allowance to Wiltshire was 11 but our team rose to the occasion with some high quality golf.

First match out was Marlyn Jackson, hcp 10 from the Isle Wedmore ably partnered by Judy Richards, hcp 25 Long Sutton. They played some super golf winning 6 and 4, despite Marlyn giving 22 shots. Second match, Mandy Head, hcp 12 Long Sutton and Sue McDonald, hcp 24 Isle of Wedmore  were two down at the turn but they played a solid B9 to win 4 and 2.

We lost two matches and won a further 3 games. Wendy Lucas, hcp 20 from  Isle of Wedmore stood in at the last minute to partner Anne Scott hcp 25, Wheathill , they were 5 up at the turn and  ended up winning 3 and 1.

In the 5th match on the 18th hole, Kathleen Burbridge, Saltford holed a difficult 6 foot downhill putt to win the match 1 up. We could see how important this putt could be. Kathleen was partnered by  debutant Jenny Elliot, Minehead GC, hcp 17. Our final pair Jackie Pike, hcp 21 Taunton & Pickeridge and Aideen Roche, hcp 23, Long Sutton GC had a strong 6 and 5 win. This was also Jackie’s first Senior match experience.

Score 5-2 win for Somerset.

I felt very proud to Captain this team who had to give between 22 and 11 shots in each match. Somerset not only played well  but they played with real sporting spirit. County Senior President Caroline Lumley Frank and Vice Captain Jill Paul attended the day and supported the team throughout.

Team members not mentioned above.

Angela Baker, Long Sutton GC, Ingrid Swinburn, Minehead GC, Christine Harris Saltford GC and Sylvie Coach Tucker, Long Sutton GC.

Thank you SCSLGA team, well done.
