The SLCGA Championships were held at Weston-super-Mare over the May Bank holiday weekend. The conditions were perfect and excellent golf was played. 25 competitors took part on the Friday playing 36 holes. The top 16 gross qualified for the Championship knockouts and the next 8 for the Phillips knockout on Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday there was a tense wait for the fog to lift from the course and the start had to be delayed by 2 hours.
In the morning the final of the Phillips Trophy was played between Jessica Haines (Burnham & Berrow) and Claire Walker (Mendip Spring) along with the semi-finals of the championship. Jess played excellent golf to win the trophy. Probably one of the youngest, if not the youngest, winner.
In the afternoon the final of the championship was played between Hannah Woodley (Enmore Park) and Aimee Sawyer (The Mendip). A close match until the tide began to turn on the 15th. Hannah finally won on the 17th to retain the championship title for 2018.
The Gliddon Vase for the best under 25 gross score was presented to Jade Cope (Weston-super-Mare), who was a quarter finalist, losing on the 21st hole.
The combined nett scores of Elizabeth Stephens Heather Kerr-Wilbur and Davina Xanh helped Mendip Spring to win the Interclub team Challenge Holt Shield,
After the presentation of trophies by our President, Amanda Mayne, Cathy Olive county Captain named the squad for the County Team.
Thank you to all the people at Weston-super-Mare Golf Club who helped to make the championship run smoothly.
